Great deals from Philadelphia to select European cities

Looking for an alternative East Coast European launchpad? Like a good deal to go along with it? Consider US Airways' Philadelphia (PHL) hub, and discount airfares as low as $298.

Once a sore point in its route system, US Airways has made marked improvements in its Philadelphia operation since the merger with America West. To underscore the fact, it is launching flights to a trio of new European cities from PHL: Brussels (BRU) on June 1, Zurich (ZRH) on June 8, and Athens (ATH) on May 25. The Athens run is seasonal.

The one-way discount airfare to Brussels is $366, to Zurich, the price is $399, and to Athens the rate is $298. Again, all these discount airfares are one-way, and they entail a round-trip purchase.

Risky travel

With the University's recent emphasis on internationalization - which has yet to touch undergraduates in a meaningful way - and the increased popularity of concentrations like international relations and development studies, we're glad undergraduates are taking advantage of newly permitted study in Israel and other countries on the U.S. Department of State Travel Warning list.

Before last March, University policy prohibited students from studying in countries on the State Department's travel blacklist. But many students studied in Israel anyway, fending for themselves by withdrawing temporarily from Brown, enrolling as a visiting student at a local university and hoping to get retroactive credit at Brown after they returned. University officials finally buckled to swelling student pressure - marked by over 2,000 signatures collected by Brown Students for Israel - to allow study abroad in Israel.

Coming from a prominent media house, Mr Vinayak will take over from Robin Banerjee who had quit the company late last year. Bus service has line on cheap, easy travel

PITTSBURGH — For Internet-savvy travelers on a budget, Megabus.com claims to offer a service that makes mainstream bus travel seem pricey: rides from Pittsburgh to Chicago for as little as $1.

The New Jersey-based company, which began operating in a number of midwestern cities last year, is hoping the promise of such bargains will entice ever more drivers to leave their cars behind in favor of its colorful coaches.

The bus line announced Thursday it will expand its service to Pittsburgh; Ann Arbor, Mich.; Columbus, Ohio; Kansas City, Mo., and Louisville, Ky. It already offers service between Chicago and Cincinnati, Cleveland, Detroit, Indianapolis, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, St. Louis and Toledo.

To keep fares low, Megabus uses online ticketing and sidewalk stops instead of ticket counters and bus terminals.
