Graduate Programs Rank High

Eight of San Diego State University's graduate programs ranked in the top 50 of their categories in U.S. News and World Report's "America's Best Graduate Schools" 2008 edition released online over the weekend and on newsstands this week.

SDSU's rehabilitation counseling program ranked 9th in the nation, an increase from its previous ranking of No. 12 in 2004, the last time the rankings for this discipline were updated.

SDSU's graduate program in international business ranked 21st in the new rankings, the first time this program has been included on this national list. Last year, SDSU's undergraduate international business program received a top ten ranking in the U.S. News and World Report's "America's Best Colleges" 2007 edition. SDSU's entrepreneur graduate program is listed 27th in the new rankings.

"We are proud that our entrepreneur program continues to be highly ranked and are thrilled that our international business program has entered the graduate rankings for the first time," said College of Business Administration Dean Gail Naughton.

U.S. Airways Still Having Problems

RICHMOND, Va (AP) - Travelers on U.S. Airways can probably expect continued delays at Richmond International Airport today because of problems while checking in.

In recent days, a merging of the computer systems of U.S. Airways and America West has led to long lines, missed flights and no sign of an end to the problems at RIC.

Airline officials have continued to promise an end to the problems, but an airline spokesman says three of five self-service kiosks at the airport were out of order.

He said the airline expected to have all five working again today.

Nursing Shortage Hits Southern Colorado

It's an issue that is quickly becoming a problem in Southern Colorado; too many hospitals, too few nurses.

Two new hospitals will open in the near future, which is something that will only make the demand grow even bigger. Memorial Hospital's North facility is set to open April 25th, and all ready, the staff has had to rethink its recruitment strategies.

"What we are doing now is that we have a larger recruiting focus, so we've been actually attending recruiting events outside of Colorado Springs," Pat Reynolds of Memorial Hospital says.

Reynolds says the staff at the new hospital is nearly two thirds of the way full, but there's still some work to do before the April opening. "Memorial Health Systems have a great reputation and we do have people applying."

It's also a problem at Penrose St.

Kidnapped Texas Baby Returned To Mother

A newborn kidnapped from a Lubbock hospital by a woman wearing hospital scrubs was found safe Sunday about 100 miles away in New Mexico, and police had a suspect under arrest.

Four-day-old Mychael Darthard-Dawodu was found in a home in Clovis, N.M., by police following up on tips, a day after she was taken from Covenant Lakeside Hospital. She was later reunited with her parents.

"It's a joyous time," Gwen Stafford, senior vice president of Covenant Health System, said at a news conference Sunday. "This has been a roller coaster of emotions. Today there's not many happy stories; this is certainly one in Lubbock, Texas."

Rayshaun Parson, 21, of Clovis, was arrested on suspicion of kidnapping and jailed in Curry County, N.M., where she had been interviewed by Lubbock and FBI investigators, authorities said.

Spitzer blasts legislators on budget

State legislators began passing bills Monday to try to add hundreds of millions of dollars to New York's budget, riling Gov. Eliot Spitzer, who singled out Senate Republicans as "both profligate and pandering."

The events could signal a bruising battle ahead as the Legislature and governor try to adopt a budget by April 1, the start of the fiscal year, less than three weeks away.

The Democratic governor said Republicans are attempting to block any attempts to restructure health-care spending, which is the largest item in the state budget. The Republicans' proposals would wipe out a state reserve fund and produce budget gaps of $7 billion next year and $10 billion the year after, he said.

In essence, Spitzer said the Republicans' proposal was an overly generous response to widespread advertising and lobbying by hospitals and a powerful health care workers union.
